Twos

The class for two year olds is designed to be an easygoing introduction to preschool.

The primary purpose of this class is to provide each two year old with the enthusiastic support and creative classroom environment to make each child feel safe, secure and embraced as an individual and member of a group of peers. The Two's class progresses in a gradual and relaxed pace to encourage confidence and success. Children will be introduced to experiences that build on their emerging awareness of the world around them. For example, each class provides opportunities for each child to experiment in art, learn new finger rhymes and songs, use their imaginations in dramatic play, and practice their conversation skills at the snack table. The teachers support and encourage peer interaction and group play.

Small class sizes allow for personal attention and allow the teachers to control sensory stimulation. Opportunities for learning through play are similar to those of the other classes but on a scale and level which is more appropriate for very young children. This first step away from home is made easier for children (and parents) in our parent cooperative, where parents share time in the classroom.

Threes

The Threes classes build on experiences from the Twos class while recognizing that this may be some children's first school experience.

Our pace at the start allows the children to adjust to new experiences, such as using the bathroom when a parent is not around. Children in the Three's are provided with more choices of play materials and open access to art supplies. The daily schedule is designed to provide plenty of indoor and outdoor "free play" as well as time for more group-centered activities, such as story, art, and snack. The Three's class is always an active group; free time activities allow for social and motor development and much imagination. As in other classes, children are allowed and encouraged to choose what they would like to do.

We strive to provide a balance between active and quiet time, and to give each child as much individual attention as possible. Field trips outside the school may be planned, depending on the needs of each group of children.

Fours

The Fours are our most active, energetic, and social group.

Peer relationships and friendships take on increasing importance at this age. The children's social relations are supported and strengthened by our staff. Play becomes more complex as the four year olds strive to understand their expanding world through their play. As the four year olds' perceptions of the world grow, so do each child's individual interests. Our program seeks to keep pace with this expanding awareness, providing materials and activities which both reflect the world they see, as well as challenge the way they see it.

Blocks of time devoted to free play both inside and out remain a large part of our Four's day to provide ample opportunity for these explorations. The Four's also spend more time together as a group, learning to share, ask questions, listen and take turns during Morning Meeting, snack, and story time.

Our program for four year olds tries to maintain a balance between activities that allow the children freedom and those which provide more structure to begin the foundation for kindergarten and more formal schooling. In the second half of the school year, our Four's class begins an exploration of the alphabet. The children are introduced to the concept of a letter as a symbol for a sound through projects, songs, stories, and other playful activities.
