Preschool Director Position

Fort Hunt Preschool (FHP) seeks a part-time Preschool Director to oversee the overall operation of our parent cooperative preschool program and continue the 60 year legacy of our play-based, nature-rich program.  A passion for and commitment to parent involvement in early childhood education is essential, as professional staff and parents collaborate to provide the best experience for each child at FHP, with parents assisting in the classroom and serving on the Board of Directors.


Essential Functions:

  • Ensure a safe and welcoming preschool setting with developmentally appropriate curriculum for children ages 2-5 focused on the development of the whole child in a nurturing environment that supports both the children and their families.

  • Oversee compliance with the Virginia Department of Education’s Standards for Licensed Child Day Care Centers, including providing parent and staff orientation training and maintaining license by submitting required renewals.

  • Provide fiscal management in collaboration with the FHP Treasurer, including assisting in drafting of the annual budget and annual compensation proposal, and monitor finances in conjunction with the Board.

  • Attend monthly Board meetings as a voting member of the Board; provide training, advice, and direction to Board members regarding daily operations and policies; and serve as a member of all standing committees.

  • Collaborate enrollment efforts with the Admissions Chair, including preparation of marketing materials and presentations, and prepare class placement assignments.

  • Supervise teaching staff, including overseeing implementation of curriculum consistent with FHP’s philosophy and mission, lead staff meetings, and participation in hiring decisions.

  • Maintain communications with membership, including drafting and communicating policy decisions and operational information to membership.

  • Draft and revise as required, annual member contracts, enrollment documents, and  annual staff contracts.

  • Act as  liaison and contact person between Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, including attending MVUC/FHP Joint Committee Meetings and fostering a positive relationship with MVUC, our landlord.

  • Actively participate in professional organizations related to cooperative preschools and early childhood education such as the Virginia Cooperative Preschool Council, Potomac Association of Cooperative Teachers, Parent Cooperative Preschools International, Northern Virginia Association for the Education of Young Children, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Virginia Department of Education Qualifications Requirements:  

  • Graduate degree in a child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university and six months of programmatic experience; or

  • Endorsement or bachelor's degree in a child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university and one year of programmatic experience; or

  • One year of programmatic experience plus 48 semester hours of college credit from a college or university, including 12 semester hours in child-related subjects; or

  • Two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity and a one-year early childhood certificate, child development credential, or certification from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization. 

  • Management experience or education or training in management is required.
